Focus To practice bunting techniques, including getting out of the box efficiently and exploding down the baseline with proper running form.
Setup Set up a four-base diamond with bases 45 feet apart. Four “bunters” are at the bases; four “pitchers” are in the center of the diamond, kneeling down. Each pitcher has several balls at his side. A third group of four are “catchers” and stand about 10 feet behind their base to retrieve balls that get away.
Procedure In this drill, players drag bunt, explode out of the box, and sprint to the next base. I suggest having one group bunt around the bases twice and then switch roles with pitchers or catchers. Hitters will have done eight drags and eight dashes to first base. Emphasize proper tagging of first base. Tagging the front of the base with the head down and a good forward lean is the proper form.
Coaching Points Teach getting the body low with a great forward lean, pumping the arms, and relaxing the hands. With proper technique and repetition, players really improve their running time to first base.
Modifications If you’re working indoors in a gym, use Wiffle balls or pickle balls. Pickle balls have a heavier coat and smaller holes than the normal Wiffle ball. These balls won’t damage the basketball floor or the lights in the gym.
