Focus To cushion the ball with the bat or “catch” the ball with the barrel of the bat.
Setup You’ll need two or more pitchers and two or more bunters to do this drill.
Procedure To emphasize the importance of feathering the ball onto the bat-sort of a “catching” action-tape a glove onto the barrel of the bat. This gives players a sense of the top hand actually giving a little when contact is made for the bunt. The proper technique is more like catching a baseball than hitting a baseball. Most young players have difficulty with this fundamental, and sometimes the difficulty carries over into high school and college ball. This drill is more of a demonstration tool than an activity; it teaches an important concept that players need to hear and see often.
Modifications The glove on the bat helps players visualize what you’re looking for. Some coaches have players put a glove on their “barrel hand” instead of using a bat. They then catch balls and roll them to a bunting location. This emphasizes the importance of the top hand giving on the bunt.
