Bunting Drills: Suicide Bunt Drill

Focus To make contact with the ball on the bunt; to break from third base as soon as the pitcher’s stride foot hits the ground.

Setup Two bunters and two runners are at the bases; two pitchers are in the center of the diamond, kneeling down. Each pitcher has several balls at his side. A third group of four players are catchers and stand about 10 feet behind each base to retrieve balls that get away.

Procedure Two players are base runners ready to attack home off the pitcher’s delivery. Two players are bunters who quickly assume a bunting stance as the ball is delivered. Bunters must get their bat on the ball and lay a bunt on the ground. Runners break for home when the practice pitchers’ stride foot hits the ground. The mentality of the bunter is, “I must make contact; I must get the ball on the ground.” As we know, the suicide squeeze has won many games and championships throughout baseball history.

Modification You can run this drill with as few as three players (bunter, runner, pitcher).
